Flare

A flare is the act of raising the nose and lowering the collective in order to reduce groundspeed, particularly after an approach to transition into a hover for landing.
After the flare reduces the helicopter's airspeed, translational lift will cease to be effective, and the collective will need to be raised to maintain altitude.
