Typically the tail motor will be a brushed motor connected to it's fixed pitch propeller via a reduction gearing, improving the motor's torque at the expense of speed. It is important that the tail motor is kept small, as since it is mounted on the end of the tail boom so far from the helicopter's center of gravity it is easy to make the helicopter tail heavy, upsetting its weight balance.
As the tail motor has to deliver a lot of power for its size, they are prone to early failiure from overheating. For this reason, and to get better tail performance, some people upgrade their tail motor to use a brushless motor direct drive arrangement.
